첫 번째 Wonky Wisdoms에서 속삭인 ‘불완전함의 민주주의’가 이번 두 번째 연작에서 숨을 쉬기 시작한다. 해방된 형상들이 마침내 자신만의 존재론적 목소리를 찾아낸다.
‘불완전함의 민주주의’란 모든 형상과 색채가 흠집 투성이라도 동등한 존재의 품격을 누리는 세계다. 비틀어진 것과 어긋난 것들이 저마다의 아름다움으로 환대받으며, 진정한 조화는 억압이 아닌 자유로운 호흡에서 피어난다.
한지 위에 펼쳐진 흰 여백은 각 존재가 고유한 빛을 발산할 수 있도록 내어주는 침묵이자 경청이다. 서로의 고유함을 침범하지 않는 예의 바른 거리감을 선물한다. 검은 먹선들은 담장에서 다리로 변신했다—이제 경계를 나누는 것이 아니라 서로를 이어주는 혈관이 되었다.
화면에 태어나는 형상들은 재즈 클럽의 즉흥연주를 닮았다. 나비 날개의 살짝 기운 비대칭, 달팽이 껍질의 어디론가 삐져나간 나선, 잠자리의 바람에 맡긴 예측불허 비행처럼—각자가 품은 고유한 리듬과 체온이 화면을 따뜻하게 데운다.
이것이 바로 ‘성숙한 삐뚤함’이다. 완벽함을 적으로 여기는 것이 아니라, 불완전함 그 자체가 완전한 존재의 양식임을 온몸으로 수긍하는 경지다. 비뚤어진 선에서 더 강렬한 생명력이 튀어나오고, 불규칙한 형태에서 더 진실한 고백이 흘러나온다는 깨달음이다.

The “democracy of imperfection” proclaimed in the first Wonky Wisdoms becomes reality in this second iteration, where liberated forms achieve ontological authenticity.
“Democracy of imperfection” means each form and color receives equal dignity regardless of asymmetry. It embraces the uneven as inherent beauty, believing harmony emerges from autonomy, not control.
Hanji’s white space serves as existential courtesy, allowing each being to emit essential radiance. Ink lines metamorphose from separation tools to communication conduits. Emerging forms resemble jazz improvisation—spontaneous yet organic, each radiating unique rhythm.
This represents mature wonkiness—wholehearted embrace of imperfection’s completeness. The creative process follows “intentional accident” where conscious surrender meets unconscious discovery.

첫 번째 Wonky Wisdoms에서 나는 ‘불완전함의 민주주의’를 선언했다. 그리고 이번 두 번째 연작은 그 선언이 현실로 구현된 순간을 담고 있다—해방된 형상들이 자신만의 존재론적 진정성을 획득하는 세계다. 여기서 말하는 ‘불완전함의 민주주의’는 모든 형상과 색채가 각자의 모습 그대로 존중받고, 완벽하지 않아도 동등한 가치를 인정받는 상태를 의미한다. 그것은 비대칭과 결함, 흐트러짐조차도 고유한 아름다움으로 받아들이는 태도이며, 조화란 통제가 아닌 자율성에서 비롯된다는 믿음이다. 이는 단지 조형 언어에 대한 선언이 아니라, 존재하는 모든 것들에 대한 태도이기도 하다.

구성의 변화는 뚜렷하다. 밀도가 답답함을 주던 곳에 여백이 들어서면서, 각 존재는 자기 고유의 빛을 발할 수 있게 되었다. 한지의 흰 여백은 단순한 공백이 아니라 존재에 대한 배려이자 예의다. 가까움과 자율성 사이의 섬세한 균형 속에서, 이질적인 형상들은 서로의 경계를 침범하지 않고 조화롭게 공존한다.

내 잉크 선들은 더 이상 경계를 긋는 도구가 아니다. 이제 선들은 형상들을 나누는 것이 아니라 서로를 이어주는 소통의 통로가 된다. 이로부터 탄생하는 형상들은 마치 재즈의 즉흥 연주와 같다—즉흥적이지만 유기적이고, 계획되지 않았으나 본능적으로 조율된 흐름. 나비 날개의 떨림, 달팽이 껍질의 나선, 공중을 무용하듯 유영하는 잠자리의 비행처럼, 각 형상은 저마다의 리듬과 빛을 품고 있다.

이것은 이제 ‘성숙한 삐뚤함(mature wonkiness)’이다. 완벽함에 저항하는 것이 아니라, 불완전함이 이미 지닌 완전함을 기꺼이 수용하는 상태. 중심의 금빛 핵들은 여전히 존재의 닻이지만, 이제는 의미의 무게에서 벗어나 가볍고 유연하게 부유한다.

창작 과정 역시 ‘의도된 우연’을 따른다—의식적인 포기와 무의식적인 발견이 겹쳐지는 역설의 공간. 나는 관람자들에게도 같은 자유를 제안하고 싶다. 그것이 나비든, 잠자리든, 추상이든, 멜로디든, 수학이든—당신의 인식이 허락하는 방식으로 이 작품을 마주하길 바란다.

In the inaugural Wonky Wisdoms, I proclaimed the “democracy of imperfection.” This second iteration witnesses the embodiment of that manifesto—a world in which liberated forms achieve their ontological authenticity.
By “the democracy of imperfection,” I mean a condition where each form and color, however asymmetrical or irregular, is granted its rightful dignity and intrinsic value. It is an affirmation of the beauty found not in uniformity, but in individuality. To honor the uneven, the offbeat, the spontaneous—is to allow things to be complete precisely because they are incomplete. This ethos extends beyond aesthetics into a broader way of being.

The compositional transformation is profound. Where density once suffocated, openness now allows each entity to emit its essential radiance. The whiteness of the hanji does not signify emptiness but serves as an existential courtesy—preserving a delicate balance between proximity and autonomy, so that disparate beings may coexist without encroachment.

My ink lines have undergone a metamorphosis—from tools of separation to conduits of connection. What emerges resembles a jazz improvisation of form: spontaneous yet coherent, unplanned yet intuitively harmonized. Each organic configuration radiates its own pulse—the flutter of butterfly wings, the spiral meditation of a gastropod shell, and the poised flight of a dragonfly gliding like an aerial dancer. Each is animated by its own rhythm and breath.

This is mature wonkiness—not resistance to perfection, but a wholehearted embrace of imperfection’s inherent completeness. The golden nuclei still serve as anchors of presence, but now float lighter, released from the burden of symbolic weight.

The creative process itself is grounded in the principle of “intentional accident”—that paradoxical space where conscious surrender meets unconscious discovery. I invite viewers into that same freedom: to encounter butterflies or dragonflies, abstractions or equations, music or mathematics—guided by the fluid logic of their own perception.

삐뚤빼뚤한 지혜들 02는 김준성 작가의 대표 시리즈 Wonky Wisdoms의 두 번째 작품으로, ‘불완전함의 민주주의’라는 철학적 개념을 시각적으로 구현한다.

Wonky Wisdoms 02 is the second work in Kim Jun Sung’s signature series, visually manifesting the philosophical concept of “democracy of imperfection.”
Using Oriental pigments and ink pen on traditional Korean hanji canvas, the artist creates free-flowing, organic forms. Abstract shapes reminiscent of butterflies, dragonflies, and snails coexist harmoniously within the paper’s white space, each revealing unique colors and rhythms. The artist’s “mature wonkiness” represents an attitude that acknowledges the beauty of imperfection itself rather than pursuing perfection.
