제 작품은 사회가 그어놓은 경계 ‘안’과 그 너머 ‘밖’의 대화입니다. 한지 위에 자유로운 색을 먼저 칠하고, ‘규정’이라는 검은 선으로 가두었습니다. 그러나 이 그림의 진정한 무게는 선 밖을 빽빽하게 채운 묵직한 펄과 금속성 색채에 있습니다. 이 밀도 높은 층은 우리를 짓누르는 ‘정의의 폭력’ 그 자체입니다.
하지만 이 압박 속에서도 색들은 침묵을 거부하며 자신의 존재를 외칩니다. 이는 억압을 담은 초상이자, 우리는 선 안에 갇히기를 거부하는 색들이라는 선언입니다.

Artist Statement: Beyond the Lines
My work is a dialogue between what is “inside” the boundaries drawn by society and what lies “beyond” them. I first painted free-spirited colors on hanji, then trapped them with the black lines of “definition.” Yet, the true weight of the painting lies in the heavy, pearlescent and metallic hues that densely fill every space outside those lines. This compressed layer is the physical embodiment of the “violence of definition” that crushes us.
But within this pressure, the colors refuse to be silenced, crying out their essence. This is both a portrait of oppression and a declaration: We are colors that refuse to be trapped within the lines.

제 작품 “선 밖”은 저마다의 고유한 색을 지닌 존재들이, 사회가 그어놓은 보이지 않는 경계 안에서 겪는 투쟁을 시각적으로 담아낸 것입니다. 이 작품을 제작하기 위해 저는 먼저 전통 한지 캔버스 위에 동양화 안료로 자유로운 생명력을 지닌 색들을 칠했습니다. 그리고 정교한 잉크 펜으로, ‘정의’와 ‘규정’이라는 이름의 엄격한 검은 선들을 그어 이 색들을 가두었습니다.
그러나 작품의 진정한 서사는 이 선들 바깥에서 시작됩니다. 저는 의도적으로 다채로운 구획들 사이의 모든 틈새를 불투명하고 묵직한 펄, 그리고 금속성 색채들로 빽빽하게 채워 넣었습니다. 이 조밀하고 압도적인 층은 단순히 배경이 아니라, ‘정의의 폭력’ 그 자체를 물리적으로 구현한 것입니다. 그 면적만큼이 바로 우리를 숨 막히게 짓누르는 사회적 압박의 무게입니다. ‘정상’과 ‘평균’이라는 이름으로 사방에서 짓눌러오는, 그 어떠한 여백도 허락하지 않는 무거운 압력. 이 작품은 그 압박, 곧 ‘선 밖’의 존재를 형상화한 것입니다.
그럼에도 불구하고, 선 안에 갇힌 색들은 침묵을 거부합니다. 열정적인 빨강은 구속에 저항하며, 즐거운 노랑은 빛을 잃지 않으며, 사색적인 파랑은 사유의 자유를 고집합니다. 이들은 경직된 틀에 끊임없이 질문을 던집니다. 왜 우리는 이 정해진 선 안에서만 존재해야 하는가?
“선 밖”은 억압적인 현실을 그려낸 초상이자, 동시에 길들여지기를 거부하는 불굴의 정신에 대한 찬가입니다. 우리는 선 안에 갇히기를 거부하는 색들입니다.

My work, “Beyond the Lines,” is a visual exploration of the struggle of unique beings confined within the invisible boundaries society has drawn. To create this piece, I first painted with oriental pigments on traditional hanji canvas, allowing the free life force of each color to breathe. Then, with a meticulous ink pen, I drew the rigid black lines—the very symbols of “definition” and “regulation”—trapping these lively hues within them.
The true narrative of the work, however, begins beyond these lines. I have deliberately packed every space between the colorful compartments with an opaque, weighty array of pearlescent and metallic tones. This dense, overwhelming layer is not merely background—it is a physical manifestation of the “violence of definition” itself. Its sheer surface area represents the crushing weight of societal pressure that suffocates us. It is the palpable pressure of “normalcy” and “average” pressing in from all sides, allowing for no empty space. This work is a physical representation of that pressure—of what exists “beyond the lines.”
Despite this, the colors trapped within the lines refuse to be silenced. The passionate red resists its confinement, the joyful yellow refuses to lose its light, and the contemplative blue insists on its freedom of thought. They constantly challenge the rigid framework, asking: Why must we exist only within these prescribed lines?
“Beyond the Lines” is both a portrait of an oppressive reality and a celebration of the indomitable spirit that refuses to be tamed. We are colors that refuse to be trapped within the lines.
