We may once have been transparent.
But life stains us, saturates us with overlapping colors.
Irretrievability itself is proof of existence.

The horizontal bands are flowing time;
the black fragments, essence within upheaval.
Stains are not flaws but patterns,
and bleeding is not absence but depth.

Purity is not the past.
It is this very moment—
the intricate light that holds every trace.
That, to me, is Purity as It Is.

우리는 한때 투명했을지 모른다.
하지만 삶은 우리를 물들이고, 겹겹의 색으로 채운다.
되돌릴 수 없다는 것, 그 자체가 존재의 증거다.
수평의 띠들은 흐르는 시간이고,
검은 파편은 혼돈 속의 본질이다.
얼룩은 결점이 아닌 무늬이고,
번짐은 부재가 아닌 깊이다.
순수는 과거가 아니다.
그것은 바로 이 순간,
모든 흔적을 담고 있는 복합적인 빛이다.
그것이 바로 나에게 '그대로의 순수'다.

In this piece, I poured my deepest emotions into bold, contrasting colors that speak to life's layers. 〈Purity as It Is〉
What is purity?
Is it the transparency of a being untouched by color,
or the depth that emerges only after embracing every stain?

Birth always begins in light—clear, silent, and unbroken. Yet life quickly thrusts us into a turbulent palette. We are absorbed, overlapped, and blurred; our original clarity dissolves. But through this very process, new colors are born. Not a single, unbroken hue, but a resonance possible only through countless imprints layered together.

In this work, I built layers of Oriental pigments upon hanji. Each stratum of color is a sediment of time; each stain, a scar; each bleeding trace, the hand of chance. The horizontal bands of red, yellow, green, and blue embody seasons and emotions—yet they infiltrate, erode, and permeate one another, until their boundaries collapse. The watermarks that remain are irreversible patterns, like the marks life inscribes within us.

Across this flow stands the black fragment of hanji—torn yet unyielding, incomplete yet central. It is the pillar that traverses all change, symbolizing the essence that does not vanish, the identity that endures even amid turbulence.

Through this work, I reject the notion of return. Purity is not a fleeting moment before the world touches us. It is here, now: the paradoxical purity completed only within time, where every trace, every scar, and every fragment are embraced without losing their light. This is what I call Purity as It Is.

그대로의 순수
순수란 무엇인가?
아무 색도 묻지 않은 투명한 존재의 상태인가,
아니면 모든 얼룩을 기꺼이 품은 후에야 비로소 얻는 깊이인가?
모든 탄생은 투명한 빛에서 시작된다. 맑고 고요하며, 깨지기 전의 상태. 그러나 삶은 곧 격렬한 팔레트 속으로 우리를 밀어 넣는다. 우리는 서로에게 흡수되고, 겹쳐지고, 흐릿해지며 본래의 맑음을 잃어간다. 하지만 바로 그 과정을 통해 새로운 색이 태어난다. 단 하나의 색으로는 불가능했던, 무수한 흔적들이 겹쳐져야만 비로소 울려 퍼지는 공명과도 같다.
이 작품에서 나는 한지 위에 동양화 물감으로 겹을 쌓았다. 색의 층 하나하나가 시간의 퇴적층이며, 모든 얼룩은 상처이고, 번진 흔적은 우연이 남긴 손길이다. 붉음, 노랑, 초록, 푸름의 수평적 띠들은 계절과 감정을 품고 있지만, 그 경계는 스며들고 침식하며 무너진다. 그렇게 남겨진 얼룩들은 삶이 우리 안에 새기는 지워지지 않는 무늬처럼, 되돌릴 수 없는 흔적이 된다.
그 흐름을 가로지르며 검은 한지 조각이 굳건히 서 있다. 찢어졌지만 흔들리지 않고, 불완전하지만 중심을 잡고 있는 기둥이다. 그것은 모든 변화를 관통하며 사라지지 않는 본질, 격랑 속에서도 굳건히 버텨내는 정체성을 상징한다.
이 작품을 통해 나는 과거로의 회귀를 거부한다. 순수란 세상에 물들기 전의 찰나가 아니다. 그것은 바로 여기에, 지금 존재한다. 모든 흔적과 상처와 파편들을 품고서도 그 빛을 잃지 않는, 오직 시간을 거쳐야만 완성되는 역설적인 순수. 나는 이것을 ‘그대로의 순수’라 부른다.
